18 Years Ago Today

18 years ago now. HM is suddenly gone, forever.

I remain, however, and am more or less in the same place in terms of dealing with the loss of the great HM/ET Bass.

Each passing year means that (naturally and obviously) more healing time has gently placed itself between the physical loss and my emotions. It’s a good thing, actually, and I’m fully committed to accepting it. After all, what choices do I have? I suppose I could resist it and maintain a life full of darkness and pain, constantly denying reality. But that’s a super hard road and kinda stupid!
Not for me.

Instead, and not unlike the movie “Otto” with Tom Hanks, 18 years ago I was handed a heavy set personal life choices.

Bottom line: my father would be glad to know that under the circumstances of his loss, I am as happy as can be, apparently able to successfully navigate both the harsh and calm conditions that make up the vast ocean of his love and legacy.

He made such a deep impression on so many of us.

I’m truly blessed to be the person writing about him.

I will always love you, dad.

You are the son he would have wanted. I know in my heart that Howard is so proud of you. You are the only one who could cherish and protect the legacy of this huge talent. I am so honored to call you both friend.

I’m glad you post each year and I get to think about one of my favorite … and one the greatest … comedic actors!
It doesn’t get any better than Kelp’s father (“my poor Dada”) and ETB!

Your dads comedy was so natural and innocent. He was a great star even before the AG show. I’ve become a collector of many of his photos and I will always admire his charisma and excellence in comedy.

I am glad that you keep this page going. I just discovered it today as I decided to look up the Andy Griffith show episode where Ernest T Bass learns to be civilized : “HOW DO YOU DO, MRS. WILEY?!” Find that clip here:

Mr. Morris had quite a career. But of course, as a loyal fan of that show, his work there is remembered most fondly. I NEVER get tired of watching him in that role of that rock throwing mountain man!! He brought, and still brings, much laughter and comfort in a world that is quite upside down now. God bless you, son of Howard Morris!!

    David,
I have always loved the characters your dad portrayed all through his career. What a funny guy he was on film. As a working Dad, I’m sure he was away too much and that was most likely his regret late in life. I’m certain he loved you and your family so much. I have a few photographs that you probably have copies of but I would share copies if you wish. Keep smiling and stay positive!!!

    Hello David
I’m new to the website, and I’m a huge fan of your Dad’s voice acting work for both Disney and Hanna-Barbera. I used to watch “The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh” on VHS a lot when I was growing up in the 90s as well as watching reruns of Hanna-Barbera shows like “Atom Ant” and “Magilla Gorilla” on Cartoon Network. Having gone through your previous posts I sense the deep loss felt not just by you but everyone who had the honor of knowing Howard. Please accept my condolences.

From a loyal fan Sincerely Amanda Moats.
